All you need to know about LED treatments

Research has proven that light therapy is effective in treating many skin concerns. However, visible positive long-term results are cumulative, meaning that if appointments are not regular, results will not be long-term. According to Dr. Maryam Zamani, at-home LED devices are an excellent way to bring a normally in-office treatment to the comfort of your home. These are not as strong as those used in a clinic setting, but they have similar benefits and can be used in regular sessions.

What is Light Therapy?

The abbreviation LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Light therapy, or LED treatments have been around for over 30 years and were originally developed for astronauts to help with tissue healing and repair. Today, they are the perfect answer to a complete at-home facial treatment delivering cumulative results. With this type of treatment, never forget that commitment is the key to obtain strong results. Its overarching benefits include promoting overall skin rejuvenation and soothing inflammation, radiance boost, as well as reducing pigmentation and decreasing bacteria that sits on the surface of the skin. LED’s emit varying wavelengths of light depending on the chosen option.

The MZ Skin Light Therapy Golden Facial Treatment Device is a five-coloured light treatment that results in transformative radiant skin. The healing combination of the LED calms and rejuvenates the complexion while visibly diminishing hyper-pigmentation. Start by washing the face with MZ Skin Cleanse & Clarify Dual Action AHA Cleanser & Mask , using the MZ Skin Natural Konjac Sponge to remove make-up and debris, and rinse thoroughly. Follow with a hydrating serum. Wear the mask and press ON. It is very comfortable and not bright on the eyes. Keep it on the chosen light for 15 to 20 minutes for a transformative radiant glow, and continue to use 2-3 times per week, starting with 10 minutes of mask time and slowly building up to 20 minutes. Active products can be applied after the light therapy session.

Each light performs a targeted treatment:

  • Red light has profound anti-ageing benefits, it stimulates collagen and elastin production and strengthens skin. This light setting also reduces inflammation, heals blemishes, repairs sun damage and improves scarring.
  • Blue light balances and clarifies the skin, treating acne. With repetitive use, this light improves blemished skin by decreasing the amount of p.acnes, a bacteria that lives on the surface of the skin and contributes to the formation of acne.
  • Green light calms skin and reduces pigmentation, broken capillaries and sunspots.
  • Yellow light reduces redness and boosts circulation. It is ideal for sensitive skin as it boosts lymphatic flow and soothes the skin.
  • White light penetrates deeply to promote wound healing and skin repair.

Is LED similar to blue light?

LED masks are not similar to UV or blue light, the wavelengths are much longer which stimulates cell repair rather than damage. LED phototherapy or light emitting diode phototherapy combines clinically proven wavelengths of light to deliver safe and efficacious results to treat a number of conditions with no downtime or discomfort. A course of at-home treatments help to stimulate collagen production as well as the repair response. The purpose is to help accelerate cell renewal and help improve a number of skin concerns.

Can I use multiple light options during the same session?

Lights can be used at the same time; however, we recommend two different lights for 10 minutes each. Overdoing all at once can cause redness and irritation and worsen breakouts. Alternatively, use a combination of lights throughout the week (i.e. Red light on Monday; Blue light in Tuesday etc.) in order to get a different type of skin treatment every day. Do not exceed usage time as prolonged exposure could cause skin or eye damage.
