How to combat dark circles

We’re sharing some of the most common reasons why you might have dark circles and some top tips to help combat them.

What causes dark circles?

Dark lower eyelids or undereye bags can be caused by a number of reasons:

  • Volume Loss
As we enter our 30s, our faces begin to change from cumulative exposure to the sun, weight fluctuations (including pregnancy), lifestyle, genetics and simple ageing. A tear trough begins to form at the eyelid-cheek junction, and we develop drooping of the upper eyelid that accentuates the tear trough.
  • Lack of sleep
Not getting enough sleep leads to the dark circles being accentuated. This is caused by the dilatation of blood vessels.
  • Genetics
Some people can simply just have a genetic predisposition to dark circles.

Our top tips for how to get rid of dark circles

  • Get your beauty sleep
This means stopping screen time at least 30 minutes before bed to ensure lots of restful sleep!
  • Hydrate
Drink plenty of fluids in the morning and throughout the day, and ensure you are using hydrating serums and creams in your skincare routine
  • Use an eye mask
Use Hydra-Bright Gold Eye Mask, or Anti-Pollution Illuminating Eye Mask to cool the undereye area. Top tip: placing the eye mask in the freezer for a few minutes can restrict blood vessels and therefore decease darkness of the lower eyelids.
  • Use an SPF
This is something most tend to forget! Apply around they eye area as the sun can emphasise the appearance of dark circles.
  • Find a high-quality eye cream
Look for creams that have hydrating and growth ingredients.
  • Add an intensive treatment to your routine
Use our 5-day intensive eye regime Brightening & Hydrating Eye Ampoules that have been formulated to reduce dark circles.

What ingredients should I look for in eye treatments?

As the eye area is thin and delicate, eye creams are formulated with better penetration of actives and retention of hydration.

Look out for the following ingredients in your eye treatments:

· Hyaluronic Acid to create moisture.
· Ceramides help to lock in moisture.
· Growth factors such as, tripeptides and caffeine to help minimise and reduce dark circles.
· Antioxidants to promote collagen production.
