The Clean Beauty Trend

Clean beauty has become a buzz phrase that is thought to mean products that are free from ingredients that are considered potentially harmful and can range from medical,  vegan, or organic skincare. For us the meaning of clean beauty is that all our products contain no nasties, where every single ingredient has a purpose to benefit the skin.

Products that are labelled organic or natural does not necessarily mean they are clean or that they do not have harmful ingredients within them.  Products that are not natural or organic and use chemicals can be considered clean because not all chemicals are harmful.

Why do we care?  Harmful ingredients can lead to disruption in hormone levels and possibly life-threatening illnesses. It is important to remember that the cosmetic products that are sold within the EU have gone through safety testing and if you are legally able to buy a product, then it should be considered safe. However, it is key to understand which ingredients can be harmful and why you should avoid them.

The ingredients to avoid are parabens and phlalates, at the very least. MZ Skin formulations are clinically proven to provide an easy understanding to what each ingredient delivers. Every formulation is free from parabens, phthalates, silicones, GM ingredients, synthetic fragrances, petro-chemicals, mineral oil and sodium lauryl sulphate.

Why should we avoid ingredients that are not clean?

Parabens allows products to survive for months, even years, in the bathroom cabinet.  However, there have been studies concluding that parabens disrupt hormone function triggering cell division and potentially tumours.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate also known as SLS is commonly used in products such as cleansers. It is the ingredient that gives products the foamy and bubby consistency we love. Unfortunately, SLS is known to be a skin irritant. It can strip the skin of its natural oils and nutrients which can cause irritations and dry skin. Find a product that uses a natural foaming agent rather than an SLS containing product.

Phthalates is included in many fragrances, unfortunately makes it hard to detect. They are known to be endocrine disruptors that may potentially be linked to breast cancer and reproductive birth defects in males and females. Phthalates is also known to have some possible effects on hormones.

If you are looking to clean up your beauty routine make sure to look out for these top nasties. MZ Skin only uses active ingredients that benefit the skin or support the effectiveness of our formulations. We never consider ingredient’s synthetic or natural status, but instead choose based on effective results, long-term benefits to the skin and their safety profile.
