The Power of Antioxidants

Everyone has heard of antioxidants, and their various benefits for our skin, but don’t actually know what these antioxidants are, or what they do.

In the fight against free radicals, the molecules that damage the different components of our skin’s cell (DNA, Proteins and outer barrier), antioxidants are proven to be extremely beneficial. As naturally occurring vitamins, antioxidants help neutralize these free radicals thereby keeping them contained. With this and many other benefits such as brightened skin and reduced hyperpigmentation in mind, skincare with antioxidants is considered a must have today.

How do antioxidants (i.e. vitamins) work?

Different vitamins offer different benefits when added to skincare regimes. Some of the most commonly used vitamins in skincare are vitamins A, C, E, and F.

Vitamin A – A widely used vitamin in skincare is Vitamin A, which is known for its anti-ageing properties. You’ll find this antioxidant in the name of retinol in skincare (retinol is the concentrated version of this vitamin). Retinol is known to fill wrinkles, smoothen fine lines and rough patches on the skin. It is also commonly used to combat severe acne, by decreasing inflammation, controlling excess sebum production, evening out skin tones and increasing cell growth to heal acne scarring.

Vitamin C – For skin that is dull and needs brightening, Vitamin C is the ultimate antioxidant. With results showing after 6-8 weeks of continuous use, this vitamin is responsible for lightening dark spots and reducing hyperpigmentation, resulting in bright and glowing skin.

Vitamin E – For moisturising benefits, one of the more commonly used antioxidants is Vitamin E. The gentle but effective vitamin has anti-inflammatory properties and anti-ageing properties, all while maintaining elasticity and keeping skin soft. Its gentle nature allows for it to be used synergistically with other antioxidants. That’s why you’ll find a lot of Vitamins C and E combined skincare products in the market!

Vitamin F – For skin that seems dry and dull, but is also acne prone, Vitamin F is the way to go. Vitamin F represents linoleic acid, which is a fatty acid rich in omega-6. These fats (also known as lipids) are extremely important to maintain a healthy skin barrier.

MZ Skin has a range of products that use antioxidants to help your skin fight against free radicals whilst providing other benefits.

MZ Skin Lift & Lustre, one of our award-winning serums contains Phyto Stem Cells that promotes antioxidant activity and repairs and strengthens skin, as well as Lolium Perenne Flower which has anti-inflammatory properties and protects skin from oxidative stress.

MZ Skin Tone & Lift Roller is made with germanium, a key ingredient in activating and balancing the positive and negative ions responsible for ageing, while simultaneously defending skin from surrounding environmental aggressors.

When considering the addition of skincare containing antioxidant properties into daily regimes, we recommend using a moisturiser with SPF (30 and above) and sunscreen for best skin protecting benefits. Tint & Protect, our tinted moisturiser with SPF 30 is the perfect last step to a daily skincare regime. The moisturiser contains Kahai Nut Oil (rich in vitamins A, E & F) to restore moisture level and reduce skin inflammation, while VC-IP, a stabilized encapsulated Vitamin C molecule, promotes anti-oxidant activity by reducing free radical damage, preventing pigmentation and protecting collagen.
