Aloe Barbadensis, better known as Aloe Vera is extracted from the leaves of the plant Aloe. It is a clear gel-like substance that contains anti-inflammatory properties which can topically soothe the skin. These anti-inflammatory properties can be attributed to the presence of Auxin and Gibberellins. Auxin and Gibberellins are hormones which simultaneously reduce skin inflammation and stimulate growth of renewed cells to ensure minimal scarring occurs.
Besides being an excellent anti-inflammatory agent, Aloe also moisturizes the skin. It can be used before the application of make-up, reducing any flakey-dry feeling from the use of foundation. Aloe is also beneficial to men as it can be used following shaving to reduce dryness and at the same time, heal any small cuts caused by shaving.
Additonally, Aloe contains Aloin which offers additional protection against UV damage as it functions at the epithelial level of the skin. Aloin can block up to 30% of UV rays once applied. The skin is also able to recover and heal quicker due to Aloe’s additional antioxidant properties. These include beta carotene, vitamin C and E. These antioxidants can help tackle the appearance of fine lines and the loss of elasticity in the skin as we age.
