Ingredient Spotlight – Antioxidants

Let’s talk about antioxidants.

Dull complexion, a sagging upper dermis, wrinkles, lines and dark spots are signs that our skin is losing its battle against harmful free radicals.

Free radicals occur naturally in the body when atoms break down to form harmful molecules; they damage cells and accelerate the body’s ageing process. Free radicals can also be a result of our surroundings. For instance, pollution, smoking and excessive UV exposure are all factors that cause the body to generate free radicals. This is where antioxidants come in.

If you’re not already incorporating antioxidants into your skincare range, then Vitamin C products are a good place to start.

Dr. Maryam Zamani notes that antioxidants are essential to your skin-care regimen as you age “to reduce the inflammation.” She specifically advises using vitamin C on menopausal skin.

It’s not only one of the most powerful antioxidants in the skin, but Vitamin C has also been shown in postmenopausal skin to increase collagen synthesis, stabilize collagen fibers and decrease collagen degradation. Vitamin C also helps protect against free radicals and oxidative stress in the environment while smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.

Which ingredients can encourage new collagen production and how does this process work for each ingredient?

“Vitamins C, B and E are important antioxidants for anti-ageing because of their ability to penetrate the skin.  In concentrations of 5-15% vitamin C induces the production of collagen and helps inhibit the enzyme responsible for breaking down collagen.  Its antioxidant benefit is synergistic with Vitamin E.  Niacinamide (B3) helps regulate cell metabolism and regeneration and its use helps improve skin elasticity and pigmentation.  Vitamin E is a potent anti-inflammatory to that soothes the skin and helps accelerate skin epitheliazation and contribute to photo-protection.” – Dr. Maryam Zamani
